Snapchat launches frames that let wearers capture images and video
Up to 30 seconds of video can be recorded using the second generation of Spectacles, which can then be shared with friends on the app
27 April 2018
Snapchat has launched the new generation of Spectacles, a frame that enables the wearer to capture moments from their perspective by tapping a button.
The first generation of Spectacles was first announced in September 2016. However, in the third quarter of 2017 the company reported $39.9m of charges related to excess inventory reserves of Spectacles.
The multimedia messaging app explained that images and videos taken on the new water-resistant frame can be transferred to Snapchat ‘memories’ on their smartphone, or shared with friends.
Images and videos of up to 30 seconds are transferred in high-definition via Wi-Fi and dual microphones capture high quality sound while reducing wind noise.
The frames can store up 150 videos or 3000 images at a time, which can be imported to Snapchat at a later time when the user’s phone is nearby.
An inward-facing light appears when recording and an outward-facing light lets other people knows that Spectacles are recording.
Spectacles are available in three new colours – onyx, ruby and sapphire – with two coloured lens options, such as twilight and sunset.
This is Snapchat’s second generation of Spectacles, which features faster transfer times, improved image and audio quality, as well as a lighter frame.
Electronics are housed in the arm of the frame and are one-third smaller. A case that charges Spectacles is also 20% smaller and holds four full charges.
The new frames are available in the UK exclusively from the Spectacles website and cost £149.99.
