A journey through Norville history with museum curator, Dr Neil Handley

OT explores the story of Norville’s people and products through the 453 catalogued items held by the British Optical Association Museum

Museum curator at the British Optical Association Museum, Dr Neil Handley, has taken OT on a tour through the archives following the closure of Norville.

In December 2025, Inspecs Group announced the company’s closure following a strategic review – ending the British lens manufacturer’s 125-year history.

The British Optical Association Museum holds 453 catalogued items relating to Norville – from printed catalogues and advertisements to Norville’s in-house newsletter, Norville News.

“They are a wealth of social history, not just for that company but for the British optical industry in general,” Handley highlighted.

Handley observed that the personal nature of the way Norville operated comes through in the archival material.

“What’s very clear is that it was a family-based company. There is a great sense of loyalty to the company staff who are often named in Norville publications,” Handley shared.

An item that holds “some poignancy” is the final Norville catalogue that was published in April 2020.

“It was at the printers at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. This catalogue was never issued – every single copy of it, bar this one, was pulped,” Handley said.

The museum curator shared that the records held by the British Optical Association Museum will be valuable for future generations.

“It will draw attention to the fact that there was a significant British manufacturing industry – that it was world-leading… It’s really important that these names are preserved,” he said.
