Windswept beaches and the blue beyond featured as part of OT’s June/July cover story photoshoot.

The edition’s focus on scanning professional horizons saw Dr Adrian Jones photographed at Barry Island while pictures of David Cummins were captured at a beach a few minutes’ walk from PLM Optometrists in Fife.

Cummins shared that the setting provided some unusual challenges in capturing the ideal portrait.

“Taking some snaps in the harbour, Iona was all set up for the perfect shot, when she was photobombed by an arriving fishing boat,” he said.

While Cummins was initially nervous about the photo shoot, he was put at ease by photographer Iona Shepherd – who he previously worked with on a food and drinks publication 20 years ago.

“We swapped funny stories about horrible meals, unpleasant restaurant owners and our enigmatic editor,” he said.

Cummins shared that while he was tired out after the photo shoot, a strong coffee from a thoughtful colleague helped him to power through his afternoon appointments.

Capturing beach photos by a small village prompted some curious glances from dog walkers and window cleaners.

“I didn't recognise any patients, but the next day I was met by a barrage of questions. I guess walls have eyes,” Cummins shared.

He observed that the chance to step away from his duties as a busy optometrist gave him the opportunity to pay closer attention to his surroundings.

“I rarely get a chance to stand still and stare into space, it was like meditation. I noticed things I'd never normally see,” Cummins said.
