Macular Society appoints new director of research

The Macular Society has appointed Dr Erika Kennington as its new director of research.

Kennington, who is currently head of research and innovation at Asthma+Lung UK, will join the charity from 1 September. She will take on the role from Dr Peter Bloomfield, who was the society’s first director of research.

Kennington holds a PhD in cardiac physiology from King’s College London and has worked as a research funder and strategist in the charity and not-for-profit sector for 17 years with a specialism in respiratory medicine.

A published researcher who has worked in industry and academia within health and biomedical sciences, Kennington’s work has focused on ensuring research translates into benefits for people living with health conditions, while helping to reduce health inequalities.

Commenting on her new role, Kennington said: “It’s such an exciting time for ophthalmic science. I am thrilled to join the dedicated team at the Macular Society to drive forward pioneering research into macular disease, which has a devastating impact on the lives of so many people.”

Kennington hopes to continue building on the organisation’s commitment to increase research funding.

“I’m looking forward to collaborating with top global researchers to accelerate new treatments and turn scientific potential into life-changing realities for people with sight loss,” she said.

Ed Holloway, chief executive of the Macular Society, welcomed the new director of research, sharing: “She brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position and her passion for advancing research will make a real difference to people living with macular disease.”

“As we continue to increase our investment in research, Erika’s appointment marks a significant step towards beating macular disease and finding a cure,” he continued.
