Hoya Vision Care has announced plans to accelerate sustainability commitments through its One Vision programme.

The company has pledged to achieve 100% renewable electricity usage across all operations by 2030.

This is in line with the Climate Group RE100 global initiative – a group of businesses committed to using 100% renewable electricity in their operations – and accelerates the company’s previous target of 2040.

The pledge forms part of Hoya Vision Care’s new Sustainability in Action report, outlining its progress towards sustainable ambitions.

Hoya Vision Care’s One Vision programme was launched in 2023 based around three pillars: reducing environmental impact, supporting communities, and fostering a positive workplace.

The report details progress made across the pillars, including a 25% reduction in global carbon emissions compared to financial year 2021.

The company has seen 11% less energy used to produce each lens since financial year 2021, along with 11.5% less water used and 15% of water recycled.

The report highlights a 36% reduction in CO2 emissions across the supply chain since financial year 2022, and 30% of total energy sourced from renewable electricity in financial year 2024.

Included in the report is an overview of Hoya Vision Care’s community initiatives, such as its partnership with the Reach Project in India, through which the company has delivered essential eye care services to more than 85,000 households.

The company supports the World Health Organization’s SPECS 2030 initiative, which focuses on expanding sustainable eye care services globally, and plays a role in World Sight Day through its partnership with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.

The report outlines accelerated commitments towards delivering sustainable, high-quality vision solutions including expanding community impact through improved vision care and screening for children, in partnership with global organisations and local eye care professionals, to help address myopia.

Hoya Vision Care expressed its ambition to further reduce carbon emissions across the supply chain by 2030 through sustainable packaging, recycled materials, and minimising single-use plastics.

Additionally, the company has committed to reducing water consumption by more than 25% for each lens, and introducing new recycling initiatives to reduce production waste and landfill impact.

Marius de Beer, chief sustainability officer at Hoya Vision Care, said: “One Vision embodies our commitment to delivering on our purpose to Improve Life Through Vision. We are focused on closing the addressable vision care gap through early intervention and dedicated care, while continuously reducing our environmental footprint.”

“This includes accelerating our target to achieve 100% renewable electricity usage across our operations by 2030 – 10 years earlier than originally proposed – driven by our global investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives,” he continued.
