Behind the scenes with Frankenstein
Contact lens technician, Heather Muir, ensured safe insertion and removal of contact lenses used on the UK set of the new retelling of the classic

A contact lens technician has supported the prosthetics and make-up team on the UK set of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
Heather Muir, from independent Hakim Group practice, Cameron Optometry in Edinburgh, along with locum, Alison MacDougall, advised on handling and ensured the safe insertion and removal of cosmetic lenses used on set.
The pair worked with actors, Jacob Elordi and Christian Convery, to provide specialist contact lens care.
Heather Muir commented on the opportunity: “It’s been amazing to be part of this experience. Applying our specialist knowledge in such a creative environment really highlights the importance of eye health, even in the world of film.”
“Congratulations to everyone involved in this extraordinary project. It has been a privilege to contribute to the journey,” Muir added.
This has marked the second time that Muir has gone behind-the-scenes of a film set to support with contact lens expertise in the past year, having already been brought onto the set of Netflix’s Department Q.
The Frankenstein film, now streaming on Netflix, made use of locations across Scotland including Edinburgh’s Old Town, Glasgow Cathedral, Aberdeenshire’s Dunecht House Estate, and Hospitalfield House, near Arbroath.
