Engaging emerging professionals in contact lenses

At the BCLA Clinical Conference and Exhibition, OT heard from Ian Pyzer, professional education and development lead for Johnson & Johnson UK and Ireland, on a programme to introduce emerging eye care professionals to the sector

Johnson & Johnson discussed its support for the next generation of eye care professionals at the BCLA Clinical Conference and Exhibition.

Ian Pyzer, professional education and development lead at Johnson & Johnson UK and Ireland, described the focus on eye care professionals: “We want to ensure that the emerging professional has the very best opportunities to be educated and trained, delivering those very best services and solutions that they can for their patients.”

The company wanted to engage eye care professionals with the BCLA conference early in their careers and so sponsored places at the conference for emerging eye care professionals – optometrists or contact lens opticians, trainees and newly-qualified.

“Optometry is changing,” Pyzer said. “The demand on optometrists’ time is ever-growing, with extended optical services.”

Bringing emerging professionals to the conference highlights “that the world of contact lenses is truly exciting, it is very much about the future, and is of course a solution that patients are really looking for.”

“I think it’s essential that we continue to ensure that the next generation of eye care professionals does see contact lenses as being relevant and something that they would want to focus on when they’re in their practices,” he continued.

Johnson & Johnson has two training programmes dedicated to the next generation of practitioners.

For optometrists, the company provides the Success Through Education Programme, which is being reimagined following changes to the education and training of optometrists.

Johnson & Johnson has also begun sponsoring ABDO contact lens opticians to participate in an educational programme. Rolled out in January and continuing to the end of the year, the hope is to continue this programme in future years.
