CooperVision launches MyDay MiSight 1 day

OT joined the launch event at Sea Life London Aquarium to learn more about the myopia management contact lens

Optical professionals were joined for an evening of myopia management innovation by shoals of curious fish, a shiver of sharks, and Boris the sea turtle at CooperVision’s recent launch event for the MyDay MiSight 1 day.

On 9 February, the contact lens manufacturer hosted more than 100 eye care professionals at Sea Life London Aquarium for the national launch of the contact lens.

The evening featured an overview of myopia management development at CooperVision and an introduction to the features of the MyDay Misight 1 day, followed by a question-and-answer session, and continuing professional development.

Chithra Dhanablan, professional affairs manager UK and Ireland for CooperVision, explained: “We have taken the high performing material from the MyDay family of contact lenses and combined that with the life-changing potential of ActivControl technology, bringing it together in one lens.”

Speaking to OT, Dhanablan said: “It is definitely a lens that has been highly anticipated for quite some time by clinicians, and it is finally here.”

In the UK and Ireland, the MyDay MiSight 1 day lens has the same parameters as the MiSight 1 day, from –0.25D to –6.00D in 0.25D steps, and from –6.50D to –10.00D in 0.50 steps.

The lens has a higher Dk/t of 100, a base curve of 8.4mm and diameter of 14.2mm.

CooperVision carried out a study looking at the way MyDay MiSight 1 day compared in fitting characteristics to the original MiSight 1 day lens, with regards to vision, subjective preference, and comfort.

The one-week crossover study saw 32 children each wear a pair of MyDay MiSight 1 day contact lenses for a week, and then MiSight 1 day lenses for a week, in a randomised order.

Elizabeth Lumb, global director professional affairs myopia, for CooperVision, shared: “The output of those results demonstrated that there wasn’t any really significant differences in terms of the way that the lens behaved or the success of the lens fit. We confirmed that the vision was the same and there were some small improvements in comfort.”

The study found more children strongly preferred MyDay MiSight 1 day for comfort in comparison to the original lens.

Lumb shared: “Of course the key and most important aspect of this clinical study was to confirm that the myopic defocus that the children were receiving at the retinal level was the same. We looked at aberrometry measures both on and off eye and confirmed that the relative amount of myopic defocus was consistent.”

The study also confirmed that the amount of myopic defocus through the pupil was identical, Lumb said: “66% or thereabouts of myopic defocus through the pupil – that tells us that the signals the children are receiving are the same, whether they are wearing MiSight 1 day with the proven technology, or the MyDay MiSight 1 day that embraces the ActivControl technology that has already been proven to work effectively in children.”

CooperVision has a range of resources available to support practitioners to introduce the contact lens to practice.

Dhanablan said: “We want every child in the UK and Ireland to have the opportunity to slow the worsening of their myopia – to this end we do have a suite of tools that are available.”

This includes a new online accreditation on the CooperVision Learning Academy, as well as in-practice materials to support conversations.
