Siloton has received a £8.4 million Innovate UK contract – enabling the Bristol company to accelerate the development of its portable optical coherence tomography (OCT) device.

The medical technology company received the investment as part of UK Research and Innovation’s Contracts for Innovation: Quantum Missions Primer initiative.

The two-year contract will support Siloton in the development of its in-clinic and at-home GiraffeOCT device. The in-clinic GiraffeOCT will be trialled at Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital.

The company anticipates that the contract will reduce the development process by up to two years. The Siloton team is expected to grow to 16 by August 2028.

Siloton chief executive officer, Alasdair Price, highlighted that developing in-clinic and at-home versions of the OCT system will help the government meet its ambition of moving care into the community and bringing quantum technologies into the NHS.

“The contract will also allow us to expand our technology to cover a wider range of diseases, integrate our secondgeneration BlueJay chip – the same architecture used in our system for astronauts – and build out the cloud platform that underpins the service,” he highlighted.

The potential for at home monitoring using a Siloton OCT device is currently being explored by UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health with funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research.
