Boots Opticians launches Eyes on the Road campaign
Coinciding with National Eye Health Week, the campaign encourages drivers aged over 70 to prioritise their eye health
22 September 2026
Boots Opticians has launched a new campaign to encourage drivers over the age of 70 to prioritise their eye health.
The Eyes on the Road campaign coincides with National Eye Health Week (21–28 September) following research which found 98% of drivers over the age of 70 feel driving is vital to maintaining their independence.
Older drivers recognised that their visual needs can change with age, as more than half (51%) have noticed increased glare from oncoming headlights as they have got older, rising to 57% among those aged between 80 and 84.
The survey found 99% of older drivers agreed that regular eye tests are vital for driving confidence and safety, while 68% say they would feel more confident if they knew their eyesight met the driving standard.
Kyla Black, director of optical practice at Boots Opticians, emphasised the importance of maintaining regular eye tests in order to check vision and receive advice on eye health.
The research found that, without access to a car, 81% of drivers over the age of 70 would be less able to visit family and friends independently, while 66% said attending GP, dental, or hospital appointments would be more difficult.
Around three in 10 (31%) respondents said they would feel anxious about getting to essential appointments or services, while 28% said they would feel frustrated about relying on others, and 28% reported that they would feel less in control of day-to-day life.
The survey found more than 67% of over 70s would be open to undertaking a refresher lesson to boost their confidence in getting behind the wheel.

Government figures cited by Boots Opticians indicate 6.3 million people aged 70 and over held a full driving licence in Great Britain in 2025 – up 60% from 3.9 million in 2012.
Mark Born, head of training at AA Driving School, said: “We want people to be able to keep driving safely and confidently for as long as they are fit to do so.”
“Regular eye tests are an important part of that, while refresher driving lessons can offer a separate opportunity to brush up on skills, build confidence and get comfortable with changes to roads and vehicles,” he said.
Actor and radio presenter, Larry Lamb, is an ambassador for the Eyes on the Road campaign.
He said: “Looking after your eyesight as the years mount isn’t just about seeing clearly, it’s about helping us to maintain our independence and keep us connected to the people, places and moments that matter to us most.”
