Johnson & Johnson launches Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Contact Lenses for Astigmatism
The contact lens features a new cylinder optimised eyelid stabilised design
04 September 2025
Johnson & Johnson has today launched the Acvuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Contact Lenses for Astigmatism (4 September).
The company has suggested this is the first contact lens to optimise toric design according to cylinder power, in order to meet the needs of astigmatic patients.
The contact lens has been designed with a new cylinder optimised eyelid stabilised design – featuring four ‘stability zones.’
The lens also features the key technologies of the Max range: Tearstable technology and Optiblue light filter.
The contact lens manufacturer held a virtual launch event on 3 September, featuring presentations from members of the Johnson & Johnson team discussing patient needs and the design of the lens.
The company highlighted that astigmatism affects approximately half of patients in at least one eye, and that amongst astigmatic patients, one in four discontinue contact lens wear in the first year due to issues such as blurred or poor vision and discomfort.
Kate Stockwell, head of marketing UK and IRE at Johnson & Johnson ,described how increasing digital device use amongst patients contributes to digital eye strain and dry eye symptoms, with patients requiring a contact lens that supports comfortable vision through digital lifestyles.
Panellists outlined that the cylinder optimised eyelid stabilised design of the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Contact Lenses for Astigmatism enables customisation of the slopes across four stabilisation zones across the cylinder range.
Dr Giovanna Olivares, global director of research and development at Johnson & Johnson, explained that the lens has been designed to realign with each blink, rather than with gravitational forces.
The contact lens is also designed to meet the needs of patients with higher levels of astigmatism, enhancing stability and visual acuity for these wearers.
The symmetrical design has a prism-free optic zone, designed to particularly benefit patients who have astigmatism in one eye.
Jacqueline Henderson, president vision EMEA, Johnson & Johnson, said: “We see a clear unmet need in astigmatism across the region, and our goal has been to grow our Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day portfolio to address it.”
Johnson & Johnson shared that clinical data shows a 99% first lens fit success rate for the contact lens.
Preete Kumar, professional affairs consultant, Johnson & Johnson, said: “Many of my patients with astigmatism struggle with finding a contact lens that works for them, with existing options not addressing their needs – often having to choose between comfort and stability.”
Kumar explained that the new lens offers a tailored solutions based on the degree of the patient’s astigmatism, adding: “It’s a meaningful step forward in delivering more customised, consistent care.”
The launch event on 3 September also saw a presentation by Damien Lake, consultant ophthalmologist and medical director at Tunbridge Wells Eye Centre, which explored enhancements in cataract surgery processes, and intraocular lens with high energy visible light filters.
Camille Perriat, national sales manager UK and IRE at Johnson & Johnson, closed the presentation confirming Johnson & Johnson will support practitioners with training in engaging patients on the benefits of the lenses, and trial lens kits and communications assets.
