Myopia Awareness Week 2025: four habits to combat myopia
The annual awareness week, which runs from May 19–25, highlights behaviours to prevent and manage myopia
07 May 2025
Healthy lifestyles will be a key focus of the upcoming Myopia Awareness Week, which runs from May 19–25.
A joint statement from Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) and Review of Myopia Management highlighted that the theme of this year’s annual awareness week will be ‘Screens down, eyes up.’
Members of the public will be encouraged to adopt four habits that support the prevention and management of myopia.
The habits include fostering open conversations about myopia management, keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in the field, maintaining healthy screen habits and daily outdoor time, as well as attending regular eye examinations.
BHVI chief executive, Yvette Waddell, highlighted that Myopia Awareness Week is an opportunity for the eye care sector to unite.
“Our collective impact can be far greater. Through continued collaboration, we are better positioned to address this escalating public health challenge,” she said.
“We need to spread the message that children who don’t spend enough time outdoors are at greater risk of developing myopia, which can progress to irreversible vision loss. While we don’t yet know everything about myopia, we know far too much to remain passive,” she emphasised.
Four key messages for Myopia Awareness Week 2025
1 Myopia, let’s talk about it
Encouraging open conversations about myopia risks, prevention strategies, and treatment advancements, with colleagues, parents, children and (especially) eye care practitioners2 Make myopia matter
Take the pledge to make myopia management a part of daily routines and keep up to date with the latest treatments and management techniques3 Screen smart, vision strong
Promoting healthy screen and near-work habits, having daily outdoor time and employing screen time reduction tools on smart phones and electronic devices.4 Check in for clear vision

Review of Myopia Management executive editor, Kristen Dalli, also highlighted that collaboration is key in addressing a “worldwide healthcare epidemic.”
“We implore all to get involved, spread the word about myopia, and start making healthier vision choices before it’s too late,” Dalli said.
“The changes we make today mean we can prevent the onset or slow the progression of myopia and see longer tomorrow,” she emphasised.
A range of resources, including a social media toolkit, will be available online to help practitioners and practices support Myopia Awareness Week 2025.
