Independent lens manufacturer, Optiswiss, has received two corporate social responsibility (CSR) labels.

In recognition of initiatives the company has undertaken as part of its commitment to sustainable lens production, Optiswiss has been awarded the RSE-Engagé and Responsibility Europe labels after an official review and evaluation.

The RSE Engagé label is a benchmark for assessing business’ CSR initiatives based on international standards such as ISO 26000.

Responsibility Europe is a network of CSR labels and certifications. Optiswiss achieved a ‘Confirmed’ status with two out of three stars.

Projects have focused on energy efficiency in operations and production processes, with the heat from coating facilities repurposed to provide hot water and heating for buildings, conserving water and energy.

To manage water consumption in lens production, the company uses a closed-loop and recyclable water systems where possible, with water then filtered, separated and monitored before being returned to Basel’s municipal water cycle.

The manufacturer prioritises sea freight over air freight for transporting materials, which results in a reduction in CO2 emissions, the company said, adding that from the beginning of 2024, Optiswiss has sourced renewable energy from Swiss providers for its lens production.

The company has further reduced its carbon footprint through the adoption of a new procurement policy and structured material inventories.

Optiswiss also highlighted its commitment to the wellbeing of employees, through training and social activities and regular pay equity analyses.

The company shared: “Going forward, Optiswiss aims to continually improve as an independent lens manufacturer, committed to sustainable growth alongside its customers, partners, society, and the environment.”

The manufacturer aims to fully implement the ISO 26000 guidelines for social responsibility.
