Image quality and field of view with Mainline Instruments
Mainline Instruments presented the iCare Eidon at 100% Optical
Mainline Instruments presented the iCare Eidon Ultra-Widefield TrueColor Confocal System at 100% Optical (28 February–2 March).
Joe Scott, retinal product specialist at Mainline Instruments, explained that the confocal technology captures images through a small aperture and uses white LED lighting.
This provides sharper colour-balanced images compared to traditional fundus imaging, he said.
Scott provided a demonstration of how the device can be used to obtain images in a time-efficient manner.
Through the ultra-widefield system, a single shot presents a 120-degree field of view.
Training practitioners to operate the camera is simple, Scott suggested. He told OT: “It is to do with confidence working with patients.”
“As long as you can ask them clearly to pop their chin on the rest and move their head forward, and you know you can press ‘start exam,’ it means you can be trained within a couple of minutes,” he said.
Scott shared: “With old fundus cameras there was a lot of joystick motion. You could press the camera and, if the patient moves, you’re going to get a really poor image and have to do it again – it avoids all of that with this machine.”
