A frame within a frame
OT took a look at the newest designs from Blake Kuwahara at 100% Optical
The origin of the unique Blake Kuwahara look comes from an intriguing source, OT learnt at 100% Optical (28 February–2 March).
A decade ago, whilst in Japan, the founder of the eponymous brand, Blake Kuwahara, saw a seat in a Perspex box and wondered: ‘How do I make a frame within a frame?’
Parm Bhachu, UK agent for Blake Kuwahara, explained: “That’s his whole concept. It’s not a painted acetate. It’s actually a proprietary system that he adheres two acetates together to make one.”
It is this lamination approach that makes the designs so special, Bhachu said, adding that it can take up to nine months to make just one model.
The end pieces are mitred at a 45-degree angle, which Bhachu suggests means the frame can hold a prescription lens without splaying.
Every year, the brand releases a model to recognise Pride, featuring rainbow colours, with all proceeds going to the LGBT community.
