EssilorLuxottica demos ultra widefield imaging

Darren Taylor, optometry sales and product training manager for Essilor Instruments UK, talked to OT at 100% Optical about Cellview WRI-1 ultra widefield imaging

EssilorLuxottica brought the Cellview WRI-1 ultra widefield imaging system to 100% Optical, 1–3 March.

The device is new to the EssilorLuxottica portfolio and follows an acquisition towards the end of 2024.

Darren Taylor, optometry sales and product training manager for Essilor Instruments UK, shared that the device provides a much wider view of the retina.

Providing a demonstration to OT, Taylor explained that there are two options for capturing images, the first is to take one shot for a 133-degree image, the second option takes two shots and automatically stitches them together to produce a 200-degree image.

Features include magnification and a variety of filters.

Cloud storage functionality enables practitioners to be able to access the data through an internet connection.

“Because this is ultra widefield, we get a much larger look out into the periphery of the retina,” Taylor shared.

He added: “It is a true colour fundus camera with infrared imaging. It's different enough but it’s also familiar enough that practitioners will be able to instantly have a look at the images, but also be able to use all the built-in filters and measurement devices to be able to see exactly what they need to in much more detail.”

The ability to see more of the retina could support patients’ peace of mind.

“Being able to provide this service would be able to offer almost a one-stop shop facility, and be able to look after all of their imaging needs at every eye test,” he said.

One of the reasons behind the acquisition of the Cellview product was because of the company mentality to produce imaging devices at an accessible cost, Taylor explained.
