Zeiss showcases OCT image assessment tool

OT learnt more about the new Zeiss Cirrus Pathfinder decision support tool at 100% Optical 2025

Zeiss has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) guided image assessment tool for the Cirrus optical coherence tomography (OCT) device.

At 100% Optical (1–3 March), the company demonstrated the new Zeiss Cirrus Pathfinder decision support tool.

The tool could support early disease detection and enhance patient care, the company has suggested.

Rather than exporting images for data analysis from third-party platforms, the new tool is integrated into the OCT software.

Patients will receive an OCT scan as normal, and once completed, the image assessment tool will flag any areas of potential interest.

Claire Martin, head of strategy and marketing for ophthalmic diagnostics at Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, explained: “By being embedded into the OCT, you can get instant results as soon as you’ve taken the scan, so whoever is doing the scanning can tell if it’s poor quality, or if there are areas that have been flagged of interest so they can deep dive into what is going on with the patient.”

“Some practitioners find OCT complex and they are worried about missing anything. Having a tool like this highlights with little red lines if there are any areas of interest that they should look at so they don’t miss anything,” she added.

The AI technology was trained on more than 75,000 B-scans and has been validated in collaboration with retinal specialists, which Martin suggests can encourage confidence in the results.
