Mandeep Kaur-Bains on founding an eyewear company
The IP optometrist and founder of Enka Eyewear speaks with OT about how crafting a varied career has enhanced her professional satisfaction
An IP optometrist and eyewear brand founder has spoken of the professional satisfaction she has gained from working in a variety of roles.
Speaking with OT for the October/November Flexibility matters edition, Mandeep Kaur-Bains described her motivation for establishing Enka Eyewear.
After observing flaws in the design of her daughter’s sunglasses while on holiday, her husband challenged her to take action.
Kaur-Bains decided to use the skills she has acquired working as an optometrist within Whipps Cross Hospital paediatric clinic to develop a line of affordable, high-quality frames.
“In my clinic, I find that so many children are wearing adult frames – just made smaller. They don’t fit on the bridge properly,” she said.
Kaur-Bains shared that establishing an eyewear brand has also fulfilled a creative aspect of her personality.
“Building something for yourself – especially when you have been in a particular field for a long time – is very rewarding,” she said.
Alongside her hospital role and eyewear brand, Kaur-Bains has a remote professional services role for Evolutio Ophthalmolgy and an in-person role within an Evolutio glaucoma clinic.
Kaur-Bains shared that balancing a variety of roles within her career has helped to keep her career interesting.
“I’m never doing the same thing for more than one day in a week. Because I have so many things going on during the week, I don’t feel like I do become burned out,” the IP optometrist said.
Kaur-Bains observed that the pandemic has caused a shift in how people approach work.
“Post-COVID I think there has definitely been a shift in what we want from our roles. We want more flexibility,” she said.
