AOP opens applications for Council
Optometrists urged to “put yourself forward” as two Councillors highlight the influence that being part of AOP Council has had on them as practitioners
Applications are now open for AOP Council, with members being encouraged to put themselves forward and play a direct role in shaping the future of the profession.
The AOP Council comprises 34 members, representing different segments of professions and areas across the UK. There are nine positions open for applications this year, including: Directors of independent practices, Directors of multiple practices, Employees of multiple practices, Employees of independent practices, Early career optometrist, Hospital optometrist, Locum optometrist, Optometrist practicing in Scotland, and Optometrist practicing in Wales.
The AOP has highlighted that the roles “offer the opportunity to contribute directly to the profession’s collective voice on national policy, shape the future of optometry, and help guide the AOP’s work on behalf of members.”
Current Council members have recently spoken to OT about their experiences, describing it as both impactful and rewarding. Rebecca Donelly, who represents franchisee/joint venture partner optometrists, said it is, “influential, collaborative, and empowering,” while Johnathan Waugh, who represents Scotland, said it is, “worthwhile, eye opening and fulfilling.”
“Before joining, I thought the AOP Council would be very formal and lots of sitting in meetings. In reality, it’s much more practical. Everyone is very honest and open. You’re encouraged to voice your opinion,” Donnelly shared.
A supportive and inclusive environment is central to the experience. “They are so welcoming, they are very supportive and encouraging and they do make you speak up. When they know that you have something you want to say, they’ll encourage you to do it,” Donnelly said.
Members highlight the diversity of the group as a major strength. “There’s a very diverse group of individuals and each of us bring a different perspective… that makes the discussions very interesting,” Waugh said, noting that hearing unexpected viewpoints is “the joy of being part of a large group of individuals … all there to support optometry.”
Beyond contributing to the profession, Council participation offers significant personal and professional development. “Being part of Council has contributed to my own professional development in that I get to see people who are experts in strategic thinking and governance and how they think and implement change,” Donnelly explained, adding that it has boosted confidence at a senior level.

For anyone hesitating, Donnelly shared: “If you’re waiting for the right time, don’t bother, it doesn’t come. If you care about the profession, you belong in the room, so, put yourself forward.”
