Air conditioning and frequent water breaks helped to ease contributors through a photoshoot during record-breaking heat for OT’s August/September Eye care success stories edition.
As the mercury rose and records for the UK’s hottest June temperature fell, optometrist John Davidson was photographed at his Newcastle practice, Querido & Davidson.
Davidson told OT that he decided to pass on wearing a suit or jacket for the photoshoot.
“It was shorts and sandals weather in Newcastle for the first time since 1977,” he joked.
With the air conditioning on its maximum setting, photographer, Gavin Forster, sensibly decided to stay indoors to photograph Davidson.
The optometrist described Forster’s approach as professional and courteous.
“He got some really great shots where I thought ‘actually I don’t look terrible’ – that was a win,” Davidson said.
Behind the cover story
The following day, as June temperature records were broken again, senior optometrist, Caroline Mosses, was photographed at Specsavers Leigh.
“I thought I’d be melting but thank goodness for the air con and Mark [Newton, the photographer] made sure I had plenty of breaks for a drink of water,” she said.
Mosses noted that she was initially apprehensive about featuring in a photoshoot.
“I’d never done anything like this before, but Mark was fantastic, he really helped to put me at ease and walked me through the plan for the shoot, so I knew exactly what to expect,” she said.
The senior optometrist also enjoyed seeing the lengths that Newton would go to capture the perfect shot.
“Seeing Mark squeeze into corners and climbing behind equipment to get the perfect angle for the photos was definitely fun to watch,” she said.
