EssilorLuxottica has announced the launch of a programme of live, interactive continuing professional development (CPD) sessions on its digital learning platform, Leonardo.

The programme has been designed to help strengthen patient communication and enhance people skills.

To promote the launch of the CPD live sessions, EssilorLuxottica is making it available to all. Registration information for the EssilorLuxottica live CPD is available online.

The first live session, What do they want? Patient communication mastery, will be hosted on 9 July at 7pm and offer one interactive CPD point.

The session will see optometrist, opinion leader and accredited coach, Peter Greedy, help eye care professionals (ECPs) to better understand patient needs, build stronger connections and create more meaningful patient experiences.

Greedy said: “This session is designed to help ECPs truly understand what their patients need, not only clinically, but emotionally. When we improve how we connect, we improve every outcome that follows.”

EssilorLuxottica noted that the introduction of live learning marks an important step in its ambition to deliver a learning ecosystem for eye care professionals.

Describing the reasons behind launching the series, Sameen Qayyum, Leonardo vision care training expert at EssilorLuxottica, said: “While clinical expertise remains fundamental, skills such as communication, emotional intelligence and trust-building are increasingly becoming central to delivering exceptional patient care.”

Qayyum emphasised that these capabilities are key to creating meaningful patient experiences, “supporting stronger loyalty, enhancing professional reputation, and contributing to the overall success of the practice.”

In recognition of this, EssilorLuxottica has expanded its CPD to support the development of these skills.

Topics include emotional intelligence and its role in patient care, building trust and strengthening patient relationships, removing bias to better understand individual needs, developing expert questioning techniques, and listening to understand – not only to respond.

The live sessions build on the Leonardo’s self-study CPD area, which launched last year.

The platform has recently introduced a dedicated soft skills curriculum in partnership with Peter Greedy, Sheena Tanna-Shah, Samantha Strong, and Paul Chapman-Hatchett.

Topics cover wellbeing and resilience, professional pathways and career development, inclusive patient care, managing professional conflict, and effective communication for stronger patient relationships.

Qayyum said: “Developing soft skills is no longer optional. It is essential for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care and for supporting the long-term growth of our profession.”
