Verity’s journey from a full-time dispensing optician to a business owner at Specsavers shines a light on one of the several varied paths that dispensing opticians can take with Specsavers.
Here, Verity discusses the support she received to make her aspirations a reality and how she navigated the financial aspects of owning a business.
Starting as a dispensing optician
Verity began her career at Specsavers with a clear passion for patient-centered care. Having worn glasses from a young age, she was naturally drawn to the role of a dispensing optician. Verity found great satisfaction in helping customers find the best glasses for their needs. Her dedication to providing exceptional care and understanding the uniqueness of each patient's requirements made her a true asset to the team.
Career development and opportunities
One of the standout aspects of Verity’s journey is the support and encouragement she received from her colleagues and partners at Specsavers. Specsavers has a wide offering of professional development, allowing numerous opportunities for growth. Verity's partners were always encouraging her to pursue further development, whether through continuing professional development (CPD) or other learning opportunities, such as a management role.
For instance, Verity highlighted the importance of myopia management learning and how it has allowed her to share valuable knowledge with her team. This not only enhanced her clinical skills but also empowered her colleagues to provide better care to their patients.
The pathway to partnership
Verity’s transition from a dispensing optician to a business owner was facilitated by Specsavers’ Pathway program, designed to give you the skills you need to run a business. Initially, she hadn’t considered the possibility of running a Specsavers store, but now after completing Pathway she is feeling proud of her accomplishments.
Verity started the Pathway programme in July 2024 and less than 12 months later has been approved as a partner. The programme’s content, including assessment days and continuous support, helped her gain a deeper understanding of her leadership style and how to effectively manage a team. Verity was able to reflect on her strengths and areas for improvement, ultimately making her a more effective leader.
Navigating the financial aspects
One of the most daunting aspects of becoming a business owner is the financial commitment. Verity shared her initial apprehensions about the financial requirements in order to help show others these concerns can be addressed with the support of the partnership team.
The business transfer team at Specsavers and external partners played a crucial role in helping Verity navigate the financial landscape. They offered step-by-step guidance, from filling out application forms to understanding the financial viability of the business. This support alleviated much of the stress associated with the financial aspects, allowing Verity to focus on her new role as a partner.
Embracing the role of a business owner
Becoming a business owner brought a new level of responsibility for Verity. She was now accountable for the store and her team, a realisation that was both exciting and nerve-wracking. However, the continuous support from her team and the wider Specsavers network made the transition smoother.
Verity’s story is a reminder that with the right support and determination, career progression from a dispensing optician to a business owner is achievable.
