When Sam Thomas first stepped into the world of optics 16 years ago, she never imagined it would lead to running her own store on the Cornish coast. Her journey from optical assistant to national trainer, to qualified optometrist, and now partner at Specsavers in Cornwall, is a powerful example of how Specsavers offers more than just a job. It offers a career with purpose, flexibility, and even business ownership.

Sam’s route into optometry was not conventional. After years in the industry, she made the bold decision to return to university as a mature student, studying optometry at Cardiff University. Her pre-reg placement was with Specsavers, but on qualifying, she explored other avenues. What she didn’t realise at the time was just how many opportunities Specsavers had to offer – opportunities that she now champions as a partner.

“I didn’t know what Specsavers could offer me”

“I spent most of my career with one business and didn’t know what else was out there,” she reflects. “I wasn’t aware of the development pathways Specsavers offered – opportunities for further qualifications, going down the dispensing optician route, etc. Had I known, my career might have looked very different.”

After a stint with another optical retailer, Sam knew she wanted more than a clinical role. She wanted to lead, to grow, and to build something of her own. That’s when she returned to Specsavers - this time with a clear goal: owning her own business.

She completed the necessary steps to become an approved partner before joining Specsavers as a partner in Cornwall, relocating from Bristol to make it happen. The move has not been without its challenges, but Specsavers continues to support her every step of the way – from relocation funding to accommodation while she works on preparing her house for sale.

Specsavers has made it easy. They understand my personal circumstances and are helping me sort everything out. I never feel like just a number here

Relocation – made easy with Specsavers

“Specsavers has made it easy,” she says. “They understand my personal circumstances and are helping me sort everything out. I’ve never feel like just a number here. My manager checks in regularly, and I can always be honest about what I need.”

Now, almost settled in Cornwall, Sam is thriving. The lifestyle change has been transformative – not just for her, but for her family too. She is living in a place she loves, leading a team that shares her values, and will soon be much closer to her parents.

“As a partner, I care in a different way,” she explains. “I’m accountable for my team and my store. I’m part of the community. It’s not just about clinical care – it’s about leadership, development, and making a difference.”

From professional development and leadership training to the security of owning a business, Sam has found everything she was looking for - and more.

There is more to Specsavers than meets the eye

“There’s so much more to Specsavers than people realise,” she says. “It’s not just about fast-paced clinics. It’s about quality service, career development, and building something meaningful. You can run your own business, explore clinical leadership roles, and still have the flexibility to live the life you want.”

For optometrists considering their next move, Sam’s story is a reminder that the right opportunity might be closer than they think.

“At Specsavers, you get that security, plus the chance to grow. It’s a career for life.”
