Sense Medical demonstrates Canon Xephilio OCT-R1

The UK exclusive distributor highlighted the OCT and high-definition retinal camera at 100% Optical

Sense Medical, the UK exclusive distributor for Canon Medical diagnostic equipment, displayed a range of the technology at 100% Optical (28 February–2 March).

A particular focus for the show was the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1.

The device combines optical coherence tomography (OCT) with a high-definition retinal camera.

Joe Blamire, Sense Medical clinical support engineer, explained: “It is a combined system with 32-megapixel colour fundus high resolution OCT.”

The device can run different scan protocols, customisable to user requirements.

Blamire said: “These can be set to fully auto, we can cover macular volume scans, glaucoma protocols, OCT-A and anterior OCT with no attachments required.”

“It’s simply a case of selecting the protocol that is required and pointing it at the patient’s eye. The system then takes over, tracking the patient’s eye for any movements, measuring the pupil size to optimise quality,” he told OT.

Blamire provided a demonstration of how the device runs through scan protocols while monitoring the patient’s movements, target fixation, and rescanning if needed.

“All scans are set up to have enhanced depth,” Blamire said, demonstrating a 2.3-millimetre scanning depth.

“Once finished capturing, we get a full comprehensive report of everything that’s been taken. At this point, we can judge whether we want to do any retries on the captures or anything we want to reassess,” he shared.

Blamire also highlighted the scanning features available through the device for glaucoma care.

Kirsten Crisford, head of marketing for Sense Medical, told OT that the company was “really proud” to have completed a roll-out of the OCT devices to the secondary healthcare sector for diabetic eye screening.
