Optimising time for the clinician
OT met with Aston University spin-out, teleoptometry developer Eyoto, at 100% Optical
Eyoto’s teleoptometry technology is all about optimising the time of clinicians, suggested chief technology officer for the company, Alex Bamford.
OT visited the exhibitor’s stand during 100% Optical (28 February–2 March) to find out more about the technology.
Bamford leads product development, artificial intelligence development, and production of Aetheia – the company’s fully automated and remote controlled digital slit lamp.
In August 2025, the company launched automation on its slit lamp technology to enable the device to be controlled fully remotely through the internet.
For remote control of the device, the system is end-to-end encrypted, meaning there is no risk of data leakage.
The device can also be automated for local use, where a technician can go through different automation routines to gather images and videos to be sent to a remote optometrist.
At 100% Optical, Eyoto demonstrated the device in its configuration for local use.
This would involve a technician positioning the patient on the device, and with a few clicks, the device would run through customisable routines to capture images and videos.
After capture, the content can be reviewed, packaged, and sent for remote review.
“At the moment, we’re seeing lots of interest in cataract providers for pre- and post-operative assessments,” Bamford shared.
He explained that in these scenarios: “The technician will take those images, then the remote optometrist is going to review those and review the cataract to see whether or not they are suitable for the cataract replacements.”
Describing how Eyoto sees the technology being used, Bamford commented: “We’re not looking to replace the clinician at all. We’re looking to optimise their time, so they can focus on diagnostics rather than controlling the device.”
