Alcon spotlights Precision7 at 100% Optical
OT spoke to Alcon representatives about its new weekly replacement contact lens
At this year’s 100% Optical, Alcon showcased its recently launched Precision7, “the world’s first contact lens with Activ-flo technology,” Alcon Vision Care UKIE managing director, Jason Klomp, told OT.
Speaking about Precision7, Alcon head of professional education UKIE, Kate Challiner, told OT that the contact lens has been designed to be a seven-day lens with an intuitive replacement cycle.
Alcon director for global clinical research and development, Lakshman Subbaraman, said the technology used in the new contact lens represents a breakthrough that has been years in the making.
“What was considered to be the future of contact lenses, what was the dream 10 or 12 years ago, is now a reality with these lenses,” he told OT.
Speaking about the technology behind the contact lens, Subbaraman explained that, “the lens starts with a brand new lens material, serafilcon A, which is a highly oxygen transmissible material.”
During manufacturing, two wetting agents are added, he shared, adding that one is permanently bound, and another designed to be released from the bulk of the material to the surface over time.
“As soon as the pack is opened, the replenishing agent is activated, a bit like when you open a bottle of sparkling water and the bubbles start,” Challiner explained.
“What happens is it constantly moisturises the surface of the lens for up to seven days.” she added.
Challiner emphasised that Precision 7 is one of the most researched products Alcon has ever launched. “Prior to launch, we conducted 18 different clinical studies, and we’ve had data points from over 1100 patients,” she said.
Early feedback from users has been positive, Alcon highlighted.
“We had some people that got the lens last year,” Klomp shared, adding: “They all say that when they put the lens on eye, it has a remarkable experience.”
The company explained that many first-time wearers are entering the contact lens category through Precision 7 and how eye care practitioners are talking with patients about the lens.
“With Precision 7, it gives [patients] a very affordable price point to come in at, but with the latest innovative tech with water innovations,” Klomp said.
“We would really encourage all of the practitioners out there and contact lens fitters to give the lens a go and let their patients experience Precision7,” Challiner concluded.
