Alcon on involving the whole practice team in contact lens conversations

The contact lens manufacturer showcased its water surface contact lenses at 100% Optical

Alcon focused on involving the whole practice team in the contact lens journey and highlighted its water surface contact lenses at 100% Optical (1–3 March).

The manufacturer showcased its Precision1, Total1 and Total30 contact lenses.

Jason Klomp, managing director for Alcon Vision Care UK and Ireland, said of water surface contact lenses: “It is a new category that takes the best of HEMA and silicone hydrogel contact lenses and brings it together to have no more compromise, so you have good breathability and comfort.”

In particular, Alcon highlighted its Total1 product for astigmatic patients, with Klomp sharing: “They really have those higher needs of visual acuity and our lenses do a great job of helping with that.”

“We’re helping optometrists understand the technology and that it’s easy to fit a toric lens – there is a 95% success rate with the water surface lenses,” he said.

Klomp highlighted the importance of ensuring every member of the practice team can talk about contact lenses and knows about the options for astigmatic patients.

“When you walk into the practice you don’t just see the optometrist, you see someone at the desk, and someone takes you through the testing before the optometrist, and afterwards you have somebody teaching you,” Klomp reflected.

He added: “If we can help our practices have great touchpoints all along the way, and hopefully they talk about water surface contact lenses and the benefits – that there is no more compromise – we think the category will grow.”

“As you do that, people will become more engaged and excited about contact lenses and so we think it is a win-win for the patient, the customer, and for Alcon,” he said.

The aim for the year ahead is for water surface contact lenses to be seen as a category just like HEMA and SiHy contact lenses.

“If we do that, we’ll consider it a successful year,” Klomp said.
