Optegra offers treatment for dry AMD

“Around 80% of patients have a dry form of degeneration – for years, there hasn’t been any treatment,” Dr Sajjad Mahmood told OT

Patients are receiving treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) at Optegra clinics in London and Manchester.

Consultant ophthalmic surgeon, Dr Sajjad Mahmood, told OT that when he first started working as anophthalmologist, there were no treatments available for AMD.

“It was around the time I got my consultant job that treatments started to become available for wet AMD,” he said.

Mahmood noted that only 20% of AMD cases are the wet form – with 80% of cases dry AMD.

“For years, there hasn’t been any treatment,” he shared.

This year, Optegra has begun offering photobiomodulation (PBM) treatment for dry AMD with Valeda light therapy.

The treatment involves deploying different wavelengths of light to stimulate the macular, improve macular function and help stabilise vision in patients with dry AMD.

Research has found that 58% of PBM patients gained more than five letters in best corrected visual acuity after two years.

The treatment is approved for use in Europe and the UK, with a particular focus on the earlier stages of dry AMD.

Mahmood shared that the majority of patients he has treated so far with PBM have had a measurable improvement in their vision.

“They are reading more letters on the chart. Of those, many have reported a subjective improvement as well – they’re seeing the golf ball better, they’re seeing the television better,” he said.
