Frederik Zimmermann, director of business development and global expansion at Optiswiss, on the key trends in lenses, corporate social responsibility, and UK distribution
03 October 2025
Consumers are increasingly expecting to find solutions tailored specifically to their needs.
This is one trend that the independent lens manufacturer, Optiswiss, has observed in the market and see as an opportunity to present patients with highly-individualised solutions.
Frederik Zimmermann, director of business development and global expansion at Optiswiss, also identified the need for myopia management as a key factor shaping the lens market.
The Swiss company works with Deepcove Optical in the UK to bring its lenses to local practices.
OT heard from Zimmermann on the company’s latest launches, insight on consumer demand, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
An independent, Swiss high-end lens manufacturer combining innovation, sustainability, and precision to deliver optical solutions worldwide.

What is the latest launch from Optiswiss? What do you feel this offers for practices?
Our latest launch includes new sun lens tints that merge fashion with exceptional UV protection, alongside our advanced Biometrics lenses for fully customised optical performance. These innovations enable practices to differentiate themselves by offering highly personalised, stylish solutions that enhance patient satisfaction and practice differentiation.
What opportunities for growth do you see?
We have observed significant growth and opportunities, particularly in biometric lenses and myopia management solutions. Consumers are increasingly seeking personalised vision care, making biometric technology and our myopia control products like Smyle key areas for future growth.
What market do you see for biometric lenses currently? How is the company positioning itself to support practices to offer this bespoke option?
We see significant market potential for biometric lenses. Optiswiss positions itself as a strategic partner, offering opticians comprehensive training, advanced diagnostic tools such as the Oculus Myopia Master, tailored business support, and targeted marketing materials to enable practices to effectively deliver this bespoke solution.
What demand do you see amongst consumers for this bespoke option?
Consumer demand for biometric lenses is steadily increasing as more individuals seek lenses tailored to their exact visual and lifestyle needs. People value enhanced visual comfort, clarity, and performance, making these personalised solutions increasingly attractive in the premium segment.
Optiswiss celebrated two corporate social responsibility (CSR) labels in 2024. What can you tell us about the company’s goals and milestones in sustainability and CSR?
Sustainability and social responsibility are at the heart of Optiswiss’ philosophy. Our Basel production facility now runs entirely on renewable Swiss energy. We’ve implemented extensive recycling programmes, heat recovery systems, and improved energy efficiency through strategic procurement.
In October 2024, we received two CSR labels, RSE Engagé and Responsibility Europe, validating our long-term commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility, including employee equality and wellbeing. We aim to continually improve our practices, ensuring sustainable growth for us and our partners.
How does Optiswiss work with Deepcove in the UK?
Deepcove Optical is a key strategic partner for us in the UK. We work closely together to provide training, technical support, and tailored solutions for local opticians. Our collaboration ensures that customers in the UK benefit from Swiss-quality lenses with localised service and expertise.
Beyond the brand
What is your reflection on the performance of the lens market in Europe currently?
The European lens market remains competitive but robust. There is a clear shift towards premium, customised products and solutions, driven by increased consumer awareness of visual health and sustainability. While price competition is strong, innovative, high-quality solutions continue to experience growth.
Are there particular patient needs or consumer demands that you feel are currently, or likely to, shape the lens market?
Myopia management, digital eye strain relief, and highly individualised optical solutions will shape the lens market significantly. Consumers expect solutions tailored precisely to their visual needs, combined with sustainability and ethical production practices.
What are some of the external or market challenges that you feel are facing the lens sector?
External challenges include intense price competition, consolidation among major industry players, rapidly evolving technologies, and changing consumer demands. Additionally, managing sustainable production and staying ahead of technological innovation requires constant vigilance and adaptability.
Three facts about Optiswiss
- The business was founded in 1937 by two opticians from Basel who wanted to guarantee the supply of lenses to Switzerland so they established their own production
- The company has operated from the same location in central Basel for almost 50 years, only 10 minutes from the city centre
- Optiswiss has 1.50 to 1.74 Plus Mineral freeform production under one roof, as well as a 3D lens printer in the research and development department.
