An AOP explainer on... themed webinar days
Ava Williams, senior events manager at the AOP, and Dr Byki Huntjens, AOP education lead, discuss a programme of upcoming themed webinar days
This year we are delivering five online themed webinar days. Each themed day will deliver a series of back-to-back webinars each worth one interactive CPD point.
Over the past few years, we’ve received great feedback about our themed webinar days, and we know that this is a format that works well for our members. The themed days allow members to consume a variety of educational content in a short space of time and to pick and choose which webinars they attend based on topics that they are most interested in.
We have decided to introduce a few new topics this year to keep things fresh, and to better meet the needs and interests of our members. Glaucoma has been identified as an area of interest by members in the past, so we felt as though a themed day would be a great opportunity to meet this need.
The introduction of a Practice Team Day aligns with the AOP and OT’s commitment to support the whole practice team to brush up on a range of skills used in practice. We’ll deliver sessions targeted at the wider practice team including dispensing opticians and contact lens opticians as part of this event.
We hope to offer members the opportunity to further their knowledge by hearing from a range of subject matter experts speaking on a variety of topics. We believe the flexibility of these themed days has helped the success of this format. Many choose to attend all webinars available during a given day (earning up to five interactive CPD points in one day) while others choose to attend a few sessions based on their personal areas of interest.
The majority of the webinars are recorded so that members can watch them back in their own time in OT’s Education library. The recordings can be beneficial to those who attend as they can revisit the sessions at a later date, and digest the information at their own pace. They can also be accessed by those unable to join us for the live webinar, if they’d like to catch up on a particular lecture. The learnings that they acquire can then be used to apply for a self-directed CPD point via MyGOC if they wish.
We have the following themed days coming up: Glaucoma Day on Sunday 29 June, Practice Team Day on Sunday 21 September, OCT Day on 12 October, and Locum Day on 30 November. Bookings for these events will be released throughout the year, so keep an eye on the website and ensure your mailing preferences are updated so that you are notified when bookings open. MAYopia Day has already taken place and members can access the content on OT’s webinar recordings page.
We understand that in the first year of the CPD cycle members are looking to make a good start on meeting their CPD requirements, so further events will be released throughout the year. We will be delivering more one-off webinars, online peer reviews, professional development workshops, the Locum Clinical Skills Conference, our career break event and the Hospital and Specialty Optometrists Conference. Look out for updates on the AOP website.
Dr Byki Huntjens, education lead at the AOP, provides a hint of what members can expect from the programme
“Eye care practitioners are invited to elevate their clinical confidence with a series of targeted online education events organised by OT in partnership with the AOP.
Following the success of MAYopia in May, the first of this year’s engaging themed days, practitioners can look forward to four more specialised days designed to bring the latest research directly from science to the examination room.
“In June, we introduce our inaugural Glaucoma Day, offering contemporary management insights and practical strategies for detecting, monitoring, and treating glaucoma in practice. This day promises to equip practitioners with the knowledge and tools required to confidently manage glaucoma patients in their clinical setting.
“September welcomes Practice Team Day, dedicated to enhancing teamwork and overall practice excellence. This day provides valuable training and insights to support all team members in delivering exceptional patient care.
“October sees the return of OCT Day, providing practitioners with in-depth expertise on optical coherence tomography, enhancing diagnostic precision and clinical decision-making. Finally, November's Locum Day will deliver tailored education designed specifically for the unique challenges and opportunities faced by locum practitioners.
“I would like to invite all eye care practitioners to join these dynamic educational events to ensure your clinical skills remain aligned with best practices in patient care.”
Rewind
A review of AOP activity in the past two months.

Taking the conversation to parliament
At Portcullis House, the Association of Optometrists hosted a roundtable led by Peter Dowd MP, with Shockat Adam MP attending on 23 April. They discussed transforming England’s community eye care. The event focused on the AOP’s commissioned report by PA consulting which outlines four low-cost, high-impact clinical interventions, aimed at boosting patient outcomes and NHS efficiency through smarter, community-based eye health services.

Calls to utilise High Street optometry
The AOP expressed its support for Healthwatch England’s latest report, which calls on the Government to review support for the cost of NHS eye care for those on the lowest incomes. Read more about the report on OT.

Myopia in the spotlight
This May, OT and the AOP, alongside headline sponsor CooperVision, hosted a day of education dedicated to the topic of myopia. Watch the webinars on demand through the OT Education library.
