Students at the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) have organised the Optics Society Cup for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic to raise money for Vision Care.

The charity five-aside football tournament will be played between teams from the cohort of optics students, staff, and from local optometry practices.

Six teams will lace-up their boots to compete for the chance to win the Optics Cup. Entrants include teams called: K(eye)ser Chiefs, Un-Athletico Madrid, FC Volk, and The Retina Rovers.

Currently, students have raised £300 for Vision Care through entry fees and donations, including a donation from Specsavers.

The GCU Optics Society (OpSoc) organise regular social events for student optometrists, dispensing opticians, and orthoptists, and are behind the organisation of the charity cup match.

President of the GCU OpSoc, Emma McCafferty, a fourth-year optometry student, said: “It is great to bring all three groups of students together in an informal setting. After our introduction evening and Halloween event, this fits in nicely prior to the December assessments.”

Anyone who might like to make a donation is encouraged to get in touch with the OpSoc by email.
