Founders of High Street multiple, Doug and Dame Mary Perkins have been recognised for their contribution to British retail.

The husband and wife duo received the Lifetime Contribution Award at the Retail Gazette Awards earlier this month (14 October).

Acknowledging the accolade, Dame Mary said: “I was genuinely surprised to receive this award. It’s a real honour to be recognised by the industry, especially as Doug and I approach 60 years in optics.”

She said that the award was made even more special by knowing that “Specsavers has only ever been possible because of the passion and commitment of our partners and colleagues.”

“They’ve helped shape the business from day one and continue to make a difference for our customers every day,” she added.

Also recognised at the awards ceremony was Specsavers managing director of optics for the UK and ROI, Carina Hummel, who received a highly commended accolade in the Women in Leadership category.

Hummel was recognised for her contribution to the multiple, including overseeing the company’s most successful year of trading yet and championing the business’ homelessness programme.

The Retail Gazette Awards celebrate outstanding achievements across the retail sector, recognising the people and businesses helping to shape the future of the industry.
