College of Optometrists updates glaucoma higher qualifications
A “small number of updates” have been made to the learning outcomes and content, with resources to be made available for existing holders of the higher qualifications

This follows a review process in consultation with representatives from current course providers, subject matter experts, employers, qualification holders and other stakeholders to evaluate the curriculum and ensure the qualifications remain fit for purpose in and meet the needs of current clinical practice.
As a result, the College has decided on a small number of updates to the learning outcomes and content for its three postgraduate level qualifications.
These reflect advanced in technology and clinical practice in recent years, the College said.
Andy Miller, head of learning at the College of Optometrists, said: “I am delighted to announce we are publishing updated curricula with revised content and outcomes for the three glaucoma higher qualifications.”
“The new curricula reflect modern clinical practice and will ensure that optometrists are prepared to offer more services and manage more patients closer to home, delivering the aspirations of the NHS 10-Year Health Plan,” Miller said.
Course providers will be supported to incorporate and embed the changes into the courses they offer over the coming years.
The College acknowledged that holders of legacy glaucoma higher qualifications are likely to have continued developing and updating their knowledge and skills, but said it will provide guidance “for any who wish to reassure themselves, or their employers, that they are up-to-date.”
The College will contact all legacy qualification holders with resources that have been selected to help evidence equivalence of knowledge and experience for each level of the glaucoma higher qualifications.
