AOP survey seeks views on GOC proposals to update sight testing statement
Open to all professionals working in optometry, the survey will provide “crucial” insight in assessing how the proposals would operate in practice, the AOP said

The AOP is inviting members and the wider profession to share their views on the General Optical Council’s (GOC) proposed revisions to the 2013 statement on the testing of sight.
The GOC’s consultation seeks to clarify its position on pre-screening tests that may be carried out by persons other than optometrists and registered medical practitioners, and also sets out two proposed approaches to supervision of unregistered staff.
Dr Peter Hampson, AOP clinical and policy director, said: “The GOC’s proposals could define how sight tests are delivered for years to come, and it is vital that the risks and practicalities are fully considered.”
“Insight from this survey will be crucial in assessing how the proposals would operate in practice and in determining whether the changes are workable and in the best interests of patients,” he said.
The AOP survey will explore views on supervision requirements to ensure risks are minimised and to ensure there is appropriate oversight for any activity undertaken by persons other than an optometrist or registered medical practitioner.
The AOP aims to gain insight from those working across the profession through the survey, including optometrists, dispensing opticians, and optical professionals involved in pre-screening or delegated tasks.
Respondents are invited to share experiences of current practice, proposed changes, and any concerns about how the proposals may affect patient care and professional responsibilities.
The survey includes questions for employees, employers and business owners, locums, domiciliary eye care providers, teachers and lecturers, and hospital optometrists.
The survey can be completed online and will close on 8 September.
Responses to the survey will inform the AOP’s submission ahead of the GOC’s consultation deadline on 21 October 2026.
