24 June 2026
The Shadow Health Secretary visited SpaMedica Wembley on Monday (22 June) to discuss the role independent sector providers can play in supporting NHS ophthalmology services.
Rt Hon Stuart Andrew MP met SpaMedica clinicians and colleagues providing care to residents.
SpaMedica highlighted how independent service providers can support NHS ophthalmology services in reducing wating times and expand access to treatment in local communities.
He commented: “It was hugely valuable to visit SpaMedica Wembley and see first-hand the important role it plays in supporting NHS patients.”
"Restoring someone’s sight can be truly life-changing, helping people maintain their independence, remain active in their communities and enjoy a better quality of life,” he said.
He continued: “As demand on health services continues to grow, it is important that we consider how capacity across the healthcare system can be used effectively to ensure patients receive timely access to high-quality care.”
SpaMedica is one of the UK’s largest independent providers of NHS-funded ophthalmology care, specialising in cataract surgery as well as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and YAG laser capsulotomy.
Tom Fellows, head of policy and value proposition at SpaMedica, said: “We were delighted to welcome Stuart Andew to SpaMedica Wembley and showcase the contribution independent sector providers make to NHS patients every day.”
During the visit, SpaMedica discussed how the NHS could work in partnership to make greater use of independent sector capacity to support elective recovery, improve patient choice and expand access to treatment for conditions such as glaucoma and AMD.
Dr Alex Silvester, chief medical officer at SpaMedica, said: “Our surgeons and healthcare professionals are committed to delivering safe, compassionate and high-quality care for NHS patients across Wembley and North West London, and we look forward to continuing to support local communities for years to come.”
