Glaucoma UK has announced the appointment of Professor Cecilia Fenerty as its chair of trustees.

Professor Fenerty, who was appointed at the charity’s AGM, succeeds Professor Anthony King, who stepped down after completing four years as chair and nine years in total as a trustee.

Glaucoma UK highlighted that during his tenure, Professor King “played a key role in strengthening Glaucoma UK’s strategic direction and profile across the eye care sector.”

Thanking Professor King for his commitment and leadership within the role, Glaucoma UK shared that he was a strong advocate for collaborative working, high-quality care and ensuring that the voices of people living with glaucoma inform how services develop.

Professor Fenerty steps into the role with over 25 years’ experience as a consultant ophthalmologist, alongside a strong understanding of how glaucoma care is delivered across both community and hospital settings.

Reflecting on her appointment, Professor Fenerty said: “For many people, optometrists are the first point of contact in their glaucoma journey. Bringing together patient experience from across community and hospital care is essential if we are to improve pathways, communication and outcomes for people living with glaucoma.”

In July this year, Glaucoma UK will launch a National Patient Voices Survey, designed to focus on the lived experience of people with glaucoma. The findings will inform the charity’s future service development, professional practice and national decision‑making, with patient insight at its core, it said.
