Specsavers is funding the full national rollout of recycling boxes across all of its UK practices.

The initiative aims to provide patients with the opportunity to dispose of unwanted spectacles, cases and contact lens packaging responsibly.

The recycling boxes are provided in partnership with MyGroup, a recycling and waste management company that separates, sorts and recycles hard-to-recycle plastic that would otherwise end up in landfill.

The company transforms the recycled materials into useful products, such as joinery boards and furniture, Specsavers shared.

The national rollout of the scheme comes after some stores introduced the initiative in 2022. It has since grown and in 2025, the two organisations together recycled 72 tonnes of material, equivalent to the weight of a mature blue whale.

The amount, collected from 659 stores and labs, was an almost five tonne increase on the amount recycled in the previous year, the multiple said.

Specsavers head of sustainability for the UK and Ireland, Helen Curran, said: “At Specsavers we believe that sustainability must show up in our everyday operations. Investing in customer recycling in every one of our UK stores is exactly that: a practical, tangible step that keeps valuable materials in circulation and makes it genuinely easy for our customers to be part of the solution.”

The expansion of the scheme will mean that a further 300 practices will provide recycling facilities for patients.

Specsavers said the investment supports its sustainability ambition to maximise resource reuse by avoiding waste to landfill and keeping valuable materials in circulation.
