New directors for Shaw Eyecare
The owners of the family-run business, Russell and Stewart Shaw, are preparing to retire at the end of August, handing over to three new partners: Alistair Duff, Peter Telfer, and Linda Dempsey
07 August 2025
An independent practice in Cumnock, Scotland, is set for new leadership as the owners of the family-run business retire and handover to three new partners.
Shaw Eyecare, originally established by James Shaw in 1970, has been run for many years by the founder’s sons, Stewart and Russell.
Having semi-retired in 2023, the brothers plan to retire fully, with new partners, Alistair Duff, Peter Telfer, and Linda Dempsey, stepping in to lead the practice.
The Shaw brothers said of the transition: “We are incredibly grateful to our patients for their loyalty over the years. Serving the communities of Cumnock, Mauchline, Sanquhar, Thornhill and beyond has been a privilege, and we want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us through the decades.”
For Alistair Duff, the role marks a full-circle moment, as he began his career in optics with a Saturday position at the practice, returning to complete his pre-registration there. Duff then went on to work with Urquhart Opticians.
He said: “We’re honoured to take on the care of a practice with such a proud history and we hope to build in the excellent foundations laid by the Shaw family by continuing to deliver high-quality personal eye care that meets the needs of our patients today and in the future.”
Peter Telfer also has ties to the community, having attended school minutes away from the practice and playing football in Cumnock.
Linda Dempsey, an independent prescribing optometrist and clinical director for the practice, lives locally and brings more than 17 years of experience in the optical industry to the role.
The new directors will be supported by the practice team, with many having been with the practice for more than a decade. Optometrists Alan Beck, Rebecca Hamilton, and Jack Reilly, will continue to provide care.
Optical assistants Lindsey Smith, Karen Ballentyne, Karen Thomson, Carol Malone, and Joyce Gavin, will all remain as familiar faces to patients, with Colin Bell continuing as the practice’s lab technician.
Practice manager, Sarah Walker, has been with Shaw Eyecare for the past year, and has more than 16 years of experience in optics.
The practice will be joined by optometrist Kirsten Barclay and optical assistant Jennifer Clift, who both live locally and share the practice ethos.
Alistair Duff told OT about his long-term connection with Shaw Eyecare
“I was seven years old when I decided I wanted to become an optician, having visited my local optometrist, Shaw Eyecare, in 1993. I was seen by one of the Shaw twins. The experience changed my life; I did not realise that I couldn’t see and assumed my myopic world was ‘normal.’ School picked it up at this point after lots of spelling mistakes from the blackboard – and some say my spelling never quite recovered.
“From that day of the eye examination, I wanted to be an optometrist. I thought my multicoloured, round-rimmed spectacles were the bees’ knees. The optometrist had explained everything to me and reassured me that my vision would be far better wearing spectacles.

“Stewart and Russell always knew of my love for eyes and spectacles, so when I got to the age of 15 and their Saturday student left, I was invited for an interview. My roles at the time were filing, reception duties, and in the summers I got to cut lenses for hours on end. This experience really helped me grasp how different lenses and frame combinations worked (and what didn’t).
“I was aiming to study optometry at Glasgow Caledonian University, so each time there was something to see in the test room I would get to have a look, which really kept me excited for the future.
“Pre-reg went smoothly at Shaws under the watchful eye of Alan Beck, who is now the senior optometrist in the practice. Having seen both the clinical and business side of optometry, I had the chance to spread my wings at Urquhart Opticians. Many of the processes I learned at Shaws were implemented and helped make it a success.
“Being involved in my home community again is very exciting, this time alongside Peter Telfer and Linda Dempsey, who have been key in guiding Urquhart Optician’s over the years. One of the main parts I am looking forward to most is helping develop the young optometrists in the practices who also stay in the community, like myself. I hope I can be just like Stewart, Russell, and Alan were to me.”
