Specsavers has introduced a new award recognising early career excellence in memory of Judy Lea, an optometrist and head of optometry development at Specsavers, who died earlier this year.

The Judy Lea Award for Early Career Excellence has been launched to recognise pre-reg and newly qualified optometrists, within two years of qualification, who are already making a meaningful impact.

Lea was described as a “much loved educator and mentor,” with Sarah Joyce, director of optometry at Specsavers, commenting: “Judy’s work shaped the careers of countless optometrists.”

“Her legacy lives on through the many professionals she inspired through her work as a Specsavers partner, as head of optometry development, and also her roles at the College of Optometrists,” Joyce continued.

The new award recognises the impact of early career optometrists, whether community involvement, personal development, or supporting others in optics, Joyce explained, adding: “It reflects the values that Judy championed throughout her life.”

Judy’s son, Sam Lea, will be part of the judging panel for the award. The winner will be announced at the Specsavers Professional Advancement Conference on 14 September.
