A community optometry practice in Sheffield has been recognised with a Glaucoma UK Excellence in Glaucoma Care Award.

Alex Gage Family Optometrists won the team accolade after being nominated by a patient.

Rebecca Pierce, who had no family history of glaucoma, nominated the practice after being diagnosed with normal tension glaucoma after a routine eye test.

After a subtle change in her eye health was detected, a referral into the hospital eye service led to Pierce’s diagnosis.

Pierce praised the Alex Gage team, noting that they had gone “above and beyond” in her care.

It is important that clinicians know how to talk to patients and have the right manner, she said.

Alex Gage, director, senior optometrist and sports vision specialist, said: “We are truly honoured to receive the team award for Excellence in Glaucoma Care from Glaucoma UK.

“Early detection is crucial in managing glaucoma, and this recognition highlights the vital role that optometrists play in safeguarding vision. I’m incredibly proud of our team for their dedication to patient care and for always going the extra mile. This award is a testament to their hard work and commitment to making a real difference in people’s lives and within our local communities."

Alex Gage Family Optometrists is part of the Hakim Group, with practices in Woodseats and Crosspool.

The award will be presented to the team on 2 April, at the Woodseats practice.

The Excellence in Glaucoma Care Awards celebrate individuals or teams who have made remarkable contributions to the field of glaucoma care.

The awards also recognised Paddy Gunn, consultant optometrist and head of optometry at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

Gunn was also nominated by a patient, Caitlin, an elite athlete who is living with glaucoma.

In the nomination, Gunn’s support and compassionate approach were highlighted.

“He always takes time discussing treatment options and has such a welcoming and friendly persona. It’s always a pleasure to go to appointments,” Caitlin said.

She added: “Paddy always finds a way to put his patients at ease. Rather than saying ‘we will do this,’ he asks for his patient’s thoughts and opinions; his approach is always patient-centred.”

Caitlin also noted Gunn’s understanding of the severe post-traumatic stress disorder she experiences with medical procedures, highlighting his communication, planning and reassurance.

She credited Gunn with helping her continue competing despite her sight loss, and for ensuring that she could continue to live well with glaucoma.

Joanne Creighton, chief Executive of Glaucoma UK, said: “We are delighted to recognise Patrick Gunn and Alex Gage Family Optometrists as this year’s Excellence in Glaucoma Care Award winners.

“Their dedication and care make a real difference to people living with glaucoma. Paddy’s kindness and support is clearly helping patients to feel heard and empowered, while the work of the Alex Gage team to ensure glaucoma is detected early highlights the enormous importance of high-quality primary care.”

Creighton added: “Congratulations to both winners for their outstanding work in helping people to live well with their glaucoma.”
