Specsavers has urged the public not to forget about retired and potentially isolated people in their community during the final weeks of the summer.

Research has found that 62% of retired people “believe people popping around is a lifeline when they are feeling secluded in the summer.”

The research was commissioned by Specsavers Home Visits, the multiple’s domiciliary arm. 1400 retired people were surveyed.

The survey also found that 27% feel disconnected in the summer, when the social schedules of those who might check in with them are busier than usual.

Katie James, director and optometrist with Home Visits Gwent, said: “Even a small conversation that might appear insignificant could have a huge impact on an older person’s day.

“Hopefully this research goes some way to highlighting a hidden problem, and readers will use this as a reminder to pick up the phone or visit an older relative who might be hiding their feelings of loneliness.”

She added that the domiciliary services provided by Specsavers Home Visits can “give those who are housebound some much needed face-to-face interaction while providing an important service which helps them maintain their quality of life.”
