Specsavers has installed more than 1000 optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanners across its practices in the UK and Republic of Ireland, reaching a new milestone in the roll-out of the technology.

The company began a £35 million roll-out of OCT machines in 2017

Specsavers co-founder, Doug Perkins, said: “The growing use of OCT across the optometry sector has been an important development in preventing sight loss,” highlighting how the equipment can support optometrists in identifying sight-threatening conditions, such as glaucoma, “up to four years earlier than traditional methods.”

Specsavers noted that the equipment allows for the comparison of scans year-to-year, and this, coupled with greater connectivity, supports management of patients in the community.

More than 7.74 million OCT scans have been captured in the UK and Republic of Ireland by Specsavers practices in the past year.

Specsavers said that more than 100,000 people have also been referred for glaucoma-related pathology to safeguard their sight.

Perkins continued: “OCT is a jewel in the crown when it comes to clinical equipment available to community optometrists, helping them make a difference to people daily. We are confident that OCT scanners are helping reduce avoidable vision loss.”
