Optical Express has warned that millions of Brits risk permanent damage to their eyesight by wearing ‘fast fashion’ sunglasses that offer little UV protection.

Research carried out by the multiple found that 51% of shoppers buy their sunglasses from online or High Street fashion retailers.

Clinical services director at Optical Express, Stephen Hannan, said: “Sunglasses may be a great fashion accessory to team with your favourite outfit, but being sun-wise can help to avoid a variety of eye health problems.”

The multiple highlighted that sunglasses without UV protection lenses increase the risk of eye conditions, such as photokeratitis, cataracts and macular degeneration.

Optical Express has also shared tips for consumers, which include choosing sunglasses that offer UV 400 protection, checking for a CE or British Standard Mark, protecting children’s eyes and ensuring frames fit correctly to ensure light cannot enter eyes from the side or above the lens.
