Occuity displays handheld device for measuring axial length

The AX1 Axiometer is currently in development with plans to release the technology later in 2026

A handheld, non-contact device for axial length measurement garnered a great deal of excitement during 100% Optical (28 February to 2 March), OT heard.

Occuity, the optical healthcare monitoring and screening company, showcased the small and portable technology, AX1 Axiometer, which is designed to take quick measurements of axial length.

Richard Kadri-Langford, head of digital marketing at Occuity, explained: “The AX1, we think, is going to be a market-making device.”

“A lot of people want to get into myopia management now because it is being seen more and more as a duty of care. To do it effectively, you need to measure axial length,” he shared, adding that many practices don’t have access to machines that capture this.

Practices are looking for a child-friendly, hand-held solution that can be incorporated simply into their workflows, Kadri-Langford suggested, and this is where the device can fit in.

Kadri-Langford explained his passion for myopia management as a high myope himself: “Not only am I starting to feel the effects of my high myopia – I get a lot of floaters, I do worry about retinal detachment, I’m quite conscious of it probably as a side effect of working in the industry – I don’t want that for my children.”

“I want them to get treatment, and I want to know if that treatment is working,” he emphasised.

The AX1 Axiometer is currently in development and planned for release into the UK market in summer 2026.

Occuity also presented the PM1 Pachymeter, described as the world’s first non-contact handheld pachymeter, at 100% Optical.

The device is CE marked and available through Birmingham Optical in the UK.
