Essilor Instruments demos IDRA X

OT learnt more about the dry eye assessment platform at 100% Optical

The new IDRA X dry eye device brings enhanced automation and customisable ‘next step’ management options to practices, OT learnt at 100% Optical (28 February – 2 March).

Essilor Instruments provided a demonstration of the new IDRA X device by SBM Sistemi, the latest iteration of the IDRA family of diagnostic dry eye tools.

Darren Taylor, Essilor Instruments optometry sales and product training manager, explained that the biggest difference between the new device and the original is that the platform now has almost full automation with its captures.

“It incorporates eye tracking, automation, and next step dry eye management diagnostic suggestions,” he explained.

Once the procedure is initiated, the IDRA X will detect, focus, and go through the full protocol of captures to get everything required for a dry eye assessment.

The IDRA X follows the guidance of the TFOS DEWS 3 report. The process begins with an Ocular Surface Disease Index six questionnaire, then performs automated captures of tear film diagnostics to build up an accurate picture of the tear film.

Tests include an enhanced meibomian gland assessment using the IR transillumination device for an in-depth visualisation.

Taylor explained that once the tests have been performed, the device will auto-analyse the results: “By the time all the captures are finished and you go back to have a look at the data, everything should be here, with traffic light guides to indicate the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

“Once you have all of your captures and metrics, you can use the inbuilt customisable next step suggestions for your management,” he added.

The next step suggestions can be customised based on the products and technology available in the practice.

Taylor shared: “IDRA X is perfect if you’re thinking of delegating some of the dry eye journey to other members of the practice team or if you are thinking of incorporating a dry eye screening service as part of your pre-assessment for your eye exams.”

“The really nice thing about the software is its very engaging, which means it is very easy to have that dry eye conversation in practice, which all of us should be having every day,” he said.
