Blackfin talks transparent frame fronts

Nicola del Din, CEO of Blackfin, spoke to OT about the Blackfin Vitra collection at 100% Optical

Italian eyewear brand, Blackfin, showcased its Blackfin Vitra collection at 100% Optical (28 March–2 February).

Blackfin is well known for its use of titanium – a material the brand has been working with for more than 20 years.

With the Blackfin Vitra collection, Nicola del Din, CEO of Blackfin, explained: “We tried to bring the strength of titanium into a transparent product.”

Discussing how the brand has introduced transparent frame fronts to its portfolio of designs, del Din shared with OT: “We’ve joined our very deep knowledge in titanium with a new technical transparent front from a material we call VitraCore – a polyamide.”

Nicola del Din is on the Blackfin stand at 100% Optical. He wears thin titanium glasses, a black turtleneck and a black blazer. On his lapel is a tiny metal fish – the Blackfin logo. Behind him, the stand design is sleek with black walls, titanium displays of shelves, and a light wall with model imagery

The material itself is strong, del Din said, and the frame front is 2.8mm thick – a decision taken to ensure a “stable and strong” design.

The nose pads have been attached near the bridge of the frame, to avoid anchoring the elements to thinner parts of the frame. This has also resulted in greater adjustability of the nose pads.

The frames feature a micro mechanical full titanium hinge, meaning the hinge is not visible from the side when worn, for a “clean and minimal” look.

The full titanium version of the frame is “very Blackfin” the CEO commented: “It is elegant but still technical.”

An alternative version of the design features medical grade rubber and silicone nose pads.

Both are positioned as premium products, the CEO shared.

Sharing his perspective on trends in the eyewear sector this year, del Din told OT that the category is moving back towards thinner frames.

An example of the trend is the Blackfin Pacific collection. Introduced last year, the frames are thin and minimalist but with a pop of colour.

“Blackfin from my point of view, is titanium, made in-house, and colour,” del Din described.
