Optos launched its MonacoPro optomap retinal imaging device with integrated spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) at 100% Optical (1–3 March).
Sharon Ormonde, sales director for northern Europe at Optos, explained that Monaco was the first ultra-widefield device with combined posterior pole OCT.
“We took customer feedback on board and improved the OCT elements on MonacoPro,” she said, describing the enhanced quality of scans.
The workflow that can be created through Monaco means practitioners can programme the specific scans they plan to take, in the order they want to take them.
Ormonde provided OT a demonstration of the imaging process for a general glaucoma screening, and the types of information that can be obtained through the scans.
In the new device, the quality of the OCT scans has been improved, with Ormonde explaining: “We’ve got the quality of the average line scan but it’s a volume scan. We can scroll through and see the fine detail in each of those scans.”
Optos has also introduced AreaAssist, a tool designed to enhance the efficiency of retinal imaging workflows by allowing a clinician to document a lesion to gain a micrometre measurement that can be documented and saved.
“The patient walks back in through the practice door, has images taken again, uses AreaAssist again, and it will tell you whether the lesion is stable or has grown,” Ormonde explained.
She said: “This can be really good for things like geographic atrophy, age-related macular degeneration, and hyrdoxychloroquine screening – all of those things where you want to make sure if an area is growing or dormant.”
The tool can be used to document any changes on the retina, supporting clinicians in making decisions when monitoring an area and in making a diagnosis or decision to refer.
