Finnish study explores effect of long-term medication use on AMD risk in older women
Researchers in Finland have found an elevated risk of AMD among both women who take systemic corticosteroids and those on immunosuppressants

A new study published in Acta Ophthalmologica has explored the relationship between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) risk and long-term medication use among Finnish women born between 1932 and 1946.
Researchers from University of Eastern Finland and Kuopio University Hospital analysed data from two follow-up studies involving 16,518 women living in Eastern Finland.
They investigated the association between long-term medication use – classified as five or more years of purchasing a certain drug – and the incidence of AMD.
Researchers found that long-term use of systemic corticosteroids was linked to a 35% higher risk of AMD, while long-term use of immunosuppressants was associated with a 62% higher risk of the eye condition.
The scientists also found a 15% higher risk of AMD among antithrombotic medication users. However, the researchers highlighted that results with antithrombotic medications were not as consistent as with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants.
“We consider that the role of underlying inflammatory diseases during AMD progression should be examined in more detail in the future,” the researchers highlighted.
