Continuous monitoring using smart eyewear
Aston University researchers are using Blink Frames to gather information about light exposure, near work, and blink behaviour

New insight on myopia and ocular surface disease could be gained from using smart eyewear to continuously monitor a range of metrics related to eye health.
The Aston University school of optometry is collaborating with Globe Biomedical, which manufactures Blink Frames.
The smart eyewear monitors a range of variables, including light exposure and spectral composition, near-work behaviour and working distance, as well as blink rate and blink completeness.
Blink Frames also record eye-level temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure.
Lead investigator, Dr Sayantan Biswas, an optometry lecturer at Aston University, observed that much of what is known about light exposure, near work and spectacle-wearing compliance relies on participants remembering and reporting their behaviour.
“Being able to measure these behaviours objectively throughout everyday life could give us a much clearer picture of the visual environment people actually experience,” Biswas said.
“Our first priority is to evaluate what Blink Frames can measure reliably and how these data can be incorporated into rigorous vision research,” he noted.
Globe Biomedical chief executive officer, Joshua Park, highlighted that Aston University is not looking for a ‘gadget.’
“They are looking for instrumentation they can build a decade of studies around – and we built Blink Frames to be exactly that,” he said.
