A site expansion project that will see Specsavers Vision Labs lens production capacity increase from 139,000 to 169,000 has begun in Kidderminster.

The £7m project will expand the total building size from 6319 to 7544m² over the course of a year. Berrys has been appointed as the project architect while Matrix IDC is the main contractor.

Kidderminster deputy mayor, Shazu Miah, attended a breaking ground ceremony at the Vision Labs site – which is one of the area’s biggest employers.

“It’s clear that there is a huge appetite for continuous improvement and future proofing the business,” he said.

Vision Labs head of operations, Shafi Ahmed, highlighted that as well as increasing lens production, the expansion would provide an improved working environment and updated amenities.

“We will also see a number of environmental benefits, including more efficient use of electricity, reduced water consumption, and a reduction in the site’s overall carbon footprint,” he said.

Berrys partner and head of architecture, Tom Fenton, shared: “This is a meaningful project that builds on an established site, with a clear focus on enhancing both operational capacity and the day-to-day working environment for staff.”
